MA Social Enterprise Management at Liverpool Business School, UKMasters in Social Enterprise Management at Liverpool Business School, Liverpool John Moores University. Liverpool Business School (LBS) is widely recognised internationally as a leading provider of management development and consultancy to third sector organisations. It’s renowned MA in Social Enterprise Management is a pioneering programme designed to give participants with a critical skill-set to help their own organisations become more sustainable. As well as developing knowledge of the wider social economy, you will develop skills in marketing, strategy, finance, business ethics, social accounting and auditing, research and people management. The programme will bring you into contact with a diverse range of third sector managers with whom you can share your passion and experiences to enhance your own capabilities. What makes the LBS MA in Social Enterprise Management different is that it has been designed specifically for managers working in the third sector/social enterprise organisations. Like any other businesses, social enterprises need to grow, become sustainable and reduce their dependence on grants and donations. In order to do this they need to be managed more effectively. The programme therefore develops the practical skills and knowledge you will need to manage this transition in an orderly and professional manner. Masters graduates from LJMU have seen immediate payback from the MA in Social Enterprise Management. Lucy Whiting (Senior Manager) from South Cheshire Crossroads Caring for Carers, explains: “The MA Social Enterprise Management has contributed to my personal development as a Manager within the social economy. I particularly enjoyed the sessions at LJMU as they provided me with an opportunity to discuss relevant issues relating to managing within a social enterprise, with people who have a similar background and work experience. I have developed my confidence as a manager as I now feel I understand the wider political, legal and environmental context in which I work in far more detail. The programme has strengthened my skills in relation to strategic decision making and planning and this will enable South Cheshire Cross roads to develop a comprehensive social enterprise strategic plan and financial plan. The masters has also captured and fired up my enthusiasm for social enterprise, which in turn has had an effect on my motivation at work. I am enjoying feeling part of a wider movement, not simply an employee of Crossroads. The networking and support with LJMU tutors and other students has been invaluable in that respect”. Liz Allen, programme manager from ELECT (ILM) and former MA Social Enterprise student also aggress and explains: “the research carried out for my dissertation ensured ELECT secured a new £800,000 contract, as a result of my dissertation we changed our service specification and developed a new service which was the secret to winning the new contract”. The next intake for this flagship programme is September 2007, and LJMU are now looking for managers who work in social enterprise/third sector organisations who want to develop their skill base. The programme is a three-year part-time programme (attendance every Wednesday from 2.30pm during semester periods for two years then a final dissertation year that is entirely work based). Progression through the programme depends on successful completion of work-related assignments so that participants will be able to apply newly acquired skills for the immediate benefit of their organisations.
